"No matter what route, early delivery without medical indication leads to increased and avoidable risk for the baby."

Promoting birth after 39 weeks: What You Can Do

Providers and consumers have the ability to reduce late preterm births. Some strategies include:

  • Identifying high risk women and getting them to the appropriate level of care
  • Promoting early entry into prenatal care
  • Educating all about the unique vulnerability of late preterm infants, including
    • Providers
    • Parents
    • Third party payers, etc.
  • Promoting collaboration among health care team members
  • Implementing national recommendations, such as those of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and NIH not to provide non-medical inductions/cesarean births before 39 weeks gestational age.
